One example of mathematical models in the sciences, though a somewhat unusual example:

Fractals and Chaos

I spent a few months with the book.

Peitgen, Jürgens, and Saupe. 1992. Chaos and Fractals. New York: Springer-Verlag.

This book is 984 pages. There are 14 chapters, each chapter (except the first) has a computer program that can be used to explore some aspect of fractals and/or chaos.

Benoit Mandelbrot originally coined the word fractal, and did a lot of the work on this subject.

Mandelbrot came to the University of Michigan in 1998. At this time he gave two talks (see Mandelbrot 1998b and Mandelbrot 1998c in the references below). I attended both talks, and had the oppurtunity to briefly talk with him. I subsequently wrote an article:
